Story of the house
The guesthouse Hvammur stand by the harbour in a house called Hvammur (a second name, Skálholt). The house was built 1926 by Jon J. Brunnan (1884-1963) and Sigurdur Olafsson (1882-1945). The building was made of stone with a large basement. It used to be the residence if Jon and Sigurdur them self for quite some time as they used the house as their office. Hvammurinn or Skakkurinn as it was also known as was popular house and visited by many people. There used to live relatives of the owners as well as casual workers that stayed for longer or shorter period for work.

The year 1959 the house was prospering under the management of Árni and Þórhallur Dan where they established the Hotel Skalholt. From 1960 a continuing rise in tourists, both Icelandic and foreign visited Höfn and soon the Hotel couldn’t meet the demands for accommodation. In the year 1964 Árni and Þórhallur applied for a building site for a new Hotel and moved to the new hotel building that year. After that the house was used to host several casual workers that came to work at Höfn. For a lack of basic construction the house slowly was falling to pieces and generally in bad condition until in the 1989 when Tryggvi Árnason rebuilt it to its original condition as it is today.

Today Hvammur is owned by Halldór Birgirsson and Cristiane Oliveira and they have been running the guesthouse since 1999.
